Saving On Auto Insurance With Accident Foregiveness
One of the ways to get cheap auto insurance is to use a company offering accident forgiveness as an option. Accident forgiveness is a benefit that ensures that an individual’s rates will not be raised if there is an accident. Many people have a fear that if they do have an accident, their insurance rates will increase making the once affordable premiums unaffordable. Accident forgiveness prevents this from occurring. For this reason, many are willing to pay the extra money to be insured by a company that provides this service. There are, however, some factors that one must consider when considering the adding accident forgiveness to a current policy.
The increase in auto insurance rates after an accident can still occur with all drivers no matter the age or the cleanliness of an individual’s driving record. Not all auto insurance companies offer accident forgiveness and those companies that do offer this benefit may have different requirements for their programs. In most cases, benefit provides the assurance that there will not be an increase in premiums for the first vehicle accident that is the fault of the insured driver. Some insurers extend this benefit to all the individuals on a policy including teenage drivers.
There are some stipulations to the accident forgiveness benefit. In many cases this is only available to those who already possess good driving records. This can vary depending on the auto insurance company that an individual uses, but in most cases accident forgiveness is targeted towards people that are already good drivers. This is mainly because people who are good drivers tend to have fewer accidents, but suffer the most when they are involved in their first accident. Their rates can increase up to 40% even in circumstances when the accident was not their fault. To prevent drivers with good driving records from incurring such high costs and to retain these same drivers within the company by continuing to offer them cheap auto insurance, many companies are willing to avoid raising rates.
There are some stipulations to accident forgiveness that should be understood before committing to this optional service. First, accident forgiveness only applies to your driving record with a chosen auto insurance company and not to the driving record that is on record with the Motor Vehicle Administration. Just because an accident is forgiven by an insurance company does not mean that an individual will not receive points or other negative sanctions involving their license. Also, accident forgiveness is for a limited number of incidences. An auto insurance company will eventually raise auto insurance rates even for those enrolled in an accident forgiveness program if there are too many vehicle accidents. Finally, obtaining accident forgiveness will cost some individuals more money. There are some auto insurance companies that charge extra money to their good drivers to enroll in an accident forgiveness program. An increase in premiums is something that should be considered when applying for an accident forgiveness program.
Keep this in mind as you shop for cheap auto insurance. Individuals that currently possess a good driving record should consider accident forgiveness in order to prevent an increase in premiums due to an accident.
